Description
A huge part of healing our relationship to our sexuality involves increasing our feelings of safety around it.
Understanding our vagus nerve and the role it plays in gauging how safe we feel in our world can really assist us in regaining this sense of sexual safety.
The vagus nerve – or “the Wanderer” as it is also known – has several branches that “wander” throughout the body. One of these branches ends at the cervix and also runs past the gut and the heart and the lungs and attaches in the brain.
Once the vagus nerve has sensed whether we feel safe or not, it responds accordingly – and, via interaction with the rest of our nervous system, can either ultimately take us into relaxation and bliss or into freeze and shutdown.
When it comes to sexual safety – which includes consent – I think a lot of us have had experiences that have taken us out of safety and relaxation and into the unsafe/danger zone. These experiences can be anything from social conditioning to sexual shaming to toxic relationships to sexual abuse or even miscarriage or a difficult childbirth – all of these take us into the “other” side of things, the “unsafe” side of things.
And when we are stuck in the unsafe zone of Fight or Flight, we keep looping these experiences – which in turn keeps us stuck there… and so the cycle continues…
Our aim all the time with conscious sexuality work should be to try and move out of the unsafe/danger zone of the nervous system and into the safe side of the nervous system. And our pathway to doing that is via toning or calming the vagus nerve.
This Yoni Gem includes suggestions for how we can do that – in the form of the Toning The Vagus Nerve PDF. As well as a guided audio Loving Touch meditation for you to follow along with. In addition, there is also a PDF with a variety of exercises and practices we can use to increase emotional safety.
The other PDF is all about the importance of touch – and, more specifically, how we can provide this touch for ourselves.
